Lifeflow's new City StudioUnit 8b / 259 Glen Osmond Rd, Frewville
Lifeflow has been gradually growing, to the point where we now need larger premises so we can centralise our office admin, teaching and some of our members activities. We had to move out of our Norwood premises when that room became too small, and now we are at the point of needing additional teaching spaces over what we have at Morphett St. So, finally we settled the unit at 8 / 259 Glen Osmond Rd, Frewville. This was the end result of over seven years of searching around Adelaide.
Since the purchase of Lifeflow’s new city home at Glen Osmond Rd Frewville, significant steps towards refurbishing Unit 8B have been made – with some surprises along the way. Through careful and creative design work, John Adam Architect and Roarkus Moss Architecture has come up with a plan which we are confident will produce a functional, professional and beautiful space, making the most of the natural light available, and fulfilling our many needs–including quiet teaching and consultation spaces, an inviting reception/waiting area, and a library and admin office.
Throughout this planning stage we have been working with a great team of trades-people and consultants. This has enabled us to keep the costs to a minimum, while working to tight time lines, and negotiating the constraints of the existing building.
So far the latter has proven to be a bit of a challenge: while the exterior and grounds of the property are beautiful, internal demolition has revealed major (past) termite damage to an external wall, as well as an internal down-pipe and drainage system – including two internal sumps hidden under carpets! Fixes to these problems have been found, and we anticipate that building works will be completed late 2010. Unit 8b / 259 Glen Osmond Rd View Larger Map
State Heritage value The Statement of Heritage Value, extracted from The State Heritage Register states: ‘The former IPEC Building is an architecturally significant example of a mid-twentieth century corporate complex. Inspired by the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright's 'organic architecture' and with references to an Asian aesthetic, Adelaide-trained architect Peter Muller's design represented a distinctively modern and highly individualistic architectural statement at the time of its construction in 1963. The building incorporates unconventional design elements, bold use of natural materials (including landscaping), and a number of technical innovations, such as under floor heating, to create a flexible and 'people-friendly' work environment designed as the national headquarters of a growing freight handling firm. The building is a rare South Australian example of the work of the architect, whose innovative designs for a number of Sydney houses of the 1950s and 60s were regarded as being at the cutting edge of architectural design.’ Lifeflow’s Unit 8, formerly the IPEC workshop, was built later than the original complex. The workshop was designed in 1968 by Adelaide architects Roeger and Russell to be in sympathy with the original buildings. We look forward to keeping you updated with building progress in the coming months, and notifying you of a moving-in date soon. Building works through June and July 2010
