Meditation for pregnancy

Lifeflow meditation for pregnancyOne of the best gifts you can give to yourself and your baby during pregnancy is to practice meditation.

Meditation can be a powerful tool in preparation for childbirth, and many women have found that breathing meditation and other techniques can help them to stay calm and focused during labour.

Learning to consciously relax during pregnancy can lead to a deep experience of peace and well-being. This can be just as important as eating the right foods and getting the right amount of exercise. If you are calm, you will automatically communicate this feeling to your unborn child.

Regular meditation offers many health benefits including

  • reduced stress
  • lowered blood pressure
  • strengthened immune system
  • improved quality of sleep
  • increased production of endorphins which encourage a sense of well-being and reduce pain.

Using mindfulness meditation during childbirth can also help you to work with pain.

After childbirth, practising meditation can help you, your partner and your baby to stay calm during a busy new stage of your life together. It can be used as a practice for parenting over the long term.

Course content

In this course you will experience a range of meditations including working with breath, visualisations, body scans and meditations on sound (mantra). You will also learn a range of quick “spot” mindfulness meditations. These simple techniques can be used at home, at work or anywhere in your daily life.

About the instructors

The course will be led by Robyn Walden (Lifeflow Teacher) and Janine Koch (Lifeflow Meditation Guide).  Both have over 20 years meditation experience , and are themselves also mothers and grandmothers.

Robyn WaldenRobyn Walden
Robyn has been a member of the Centre since 1981 (its foundation year) and took a leading role in the Centre’s early development. Her teaching experience stems from the late 80s, expanding from giving occasional talks and guided meditations to running weekend retreats and courses.

Formerly a Sydney High School teacher Robyn later became a professional librarian working in academic libraries for over 30 years including Melbourne University and Flinders University. Robyn also manages the Centre’s library at the Tara Hills Retreat Centre.

Robyn first became interested in meditation in her early 20s when visiting the Borobudur temple in Central Java where she experienced a sense of deep mystery and calm along with a strong desire to develop and explore this quality in her own life.

For Robyn meditation practice has meant developing a greater self-understanding and acceptance of life’s changes. It has enhanced her sense of joy in everyday things such as sunsets, moon rise, the wind in the trees, birds flying and the cycles of day and night. Her favourite meditations are based on visualisation and breathing.

Robyn has one son, Tim, who is a physiotherapist living and working in Sydney.

Janine KochJanine Koch
Janine has practised Buddhist meditation with various teachers since 1980.  She became a student at Lifeflow in 1992.  Her long association with meditation has brought an underlying sense of joyfulness, a deep confidence, as well as an appreciation of the struggle that everyone has in meeting life’s challenges.

Janine has worked for many years as a vocational rehabilitation consultant.  She is currently a caseworker assisting homeless women to establish more stable lifestyles.  She has found the balancing effects of meditation to be a gift when working with deeply troubled women, contributing to their sense of safety and trust.  In her workplace Janine offers meditation sessions to groups of women with gratifying results.

As a mother of three adult children, Janine has experienced the joys and frustrations of family life.  She now has a relaxed and delightful relationship with her four small grandchildren.  Along with work and family, Janine enjoys bush camping, walking, reading, music, movies and occasional overseas travel.
